El DeBarge enters rehab

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. recording artist El DeBarge has checked into a rehabilitation center to deal with issues stemming from years of substance abuse, his record label said.

Geffen Records announced the news Monday and said all personal appearances for the singer have been postponed. The announcement did not say where the 49-year-old Michigan native is undergoing treatment.

"I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and my story with everyone. I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time," DeBarge said in a statement.
