NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Artist and musician Yoko Ono took to Twitter Wednesday to mark the 30th anniversary of her husband John Lennon's slaying in New York.

The peace activist, rock 'n' roll icon and former member of the Beatles was 40 when he was gunned down outside his Manhattan apartment building by a deranged fan who remains in prison.

"Today, on this painful anniversary, please join me in remembering John with deep love and respect," The Hollywood Reporter said Ono tweeted Wednesday. "Despite his short, 40 years of life, he gave so much to the world. The world was blessed with fortune to have known John. ... We continue to learn so much from him even today. John, I love you. 2010/12/8 Yoko Ono Lennon."
