Rapper DMX back in jail

PHOENIX, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Earl Simmons, better known as the rapper DMX, said from jail in Phoenix his recent arrest came because he took a slug of alcohol at a concert in Scottsdale.

Court records said DMX was arrested Thursday on several charges, including probation violation, the ongoing use of cocaine, the use of narcotic painkillers without a prescription, and failing to submit to drug testing, Phoenix television station KSAZ-TV reported.

DMX, released from jail for previous offenses this summer, said he read the Bible while he was incarcerated, and he had changed his life.

He spoke about his jail time in a recently released single called "Ya'll Don't Really Know."

"Sky's the limit, so I'm reaching for the stars. I'm tired of being that guy that they keep behind bars," he laments in the song's first two lines.

DMX was weeks away from completing an 18-month substance abuse program when he was arrested, the report said.

"I realize I shouldn't have done it (drank the alcohol). I wasn't done with the program. They let me out. I should have protected myself better," DMX said Saturday.

It was the rapper's sixth arrest in Maricopa County, two of which were for probation violations for 2009 felony convictions for animal cruelty, theft and drug counts.
