WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Canadian-born pop star Celine Dion, who is 42 and pregnant with twins, has been admitted to St. Mary's Medical Center in Florida, hospital officials said.

"Ms. Celine Dion has been admitted to St. Mary's Medical Center ... for observation at the recommendation of her doctors," said a statement issued to the Palm Beach Post by center spokesman Ryan Lieber. "She has been admitted to prevent the early delivery of her babies, which is a fairly common clinical practice for mothers of twins. This is done to ensure the patient can be in close contact with their doctors and clinical resources, leading up to their birth."

Last week, Dion's husband/manager, Rene Angelil, denied media reports saying the singer had scheduled an Oct. 22 C-section at St. Mary's.

The couple are also parents of a 9-year-old boy.
