Lady Gaga wins big at VMAs

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Pop star Lady Gaga was the big winner at the MTV Video Music Awards show in Los Angeles, taking home eight prizes.

The singer, who is as well-known for her outlandish costumes as she is for her music, picked up the MTV Moonmen for Video of the Year, Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video and Best Female Video for "Bad Romance" in the awards ceremony Sunday night. The clip also earned the awards for best choreography, direction and editing and Lady Gaga and Beyonce won the prize for Best Collaboration for their video "Telephone."

Eminem -- who opened the ceremony with a performance of his hit "Not Afraid," then was joined on stage by Rihanna for a rendition of their song "Love the Way You Lie" -- walked away with the statuettes for Best Male Video and Best Hip Hop Video for "Not Afraid."

VMA newcomers 30 Seconds to Mars and Florence and the Machine enjoyed their first wins for Best Rock Video for "Kings and Queens" and Best Art Direction for "Dog Days Are Over, respectively. Justin Bieber was voted Best New Artist.

Comedian Chelsea Handler served as host of the event at the Nokia Theater.
