Usher: Divorce not a failure

ATLANTA, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. pop singer Usher says even though his marriage to Tameka Foster has ended in divorce, he doesn't consider the union a bust.

"I appreciate the relationship for what it was," Usher told People magazine during an interview in his Atlanta-area home. "Even though it didn't work out, I'm glad we got together. I love her as the mother of my children; we just couldn't be married."

The couple share custody of their two children, Usher V, who turns 3 in November, and Naviyd, who turns 2 in December.

"We're two different people," Usher, 31, told the magazine. "We have two different goals. It just was never going to work out 100 percent."

Usher said the couple started to argue over everything from his parenting style to his schedule shortly after Naviyd was born.

Usher's mother, Jonetta Patton, lives around the corner from his home and provides baby-sitting services.

"She spoils them," he said. "She lets them do everything that she wouldn't let me do. Sometimes, when I'm scolding the kids, I sound just like my mom."

Usher released a new album last week and said his divorce is present in his writing.

"My music is about where I am at the time. … I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and I was suddenly a single father. But now, with Versus, I'm singing about being a dating father," he told the magazine.
