AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A cafe on the campus of the University of Texas, Austin, where singers like Lyle Lovett got their start, is in danger of closing, grass-root supporters say.
The Austin American-Statesman said Sunday that nearly 100 supporters gathered Saturday to discuss ways to keep the Cactus Cafe on the school's campus for years to come.
As part of their attempts to save the campus eatery, the supporters created a Facebook page and the Web site, SavetheCactusCafe.org.
The cafe, which also hosts a program of informal classes, is scheduled to close in August as part of a series of cost-cutting measures by university officials.
Save the Cactus Cafe organizer Wiley Koepp told the American-Statesman he is hopeful his non-profit group will be successful since support for the campus spot has been strong.
"I've been promoting events for 20 years, and I've never had a response that was this positive, this fast, or this expansive," Koepp said. "That makes me extremely optimistic that we can make an impact."
