LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Musicians said during a MusiCares gala in Los Angeles that singer Neil Young truly deserves to be named MusiCares Person of the Year.

Rollingstone.com said Saturday that performers like singer David Crosby gathered Friday night to honor Young's contributions to the world of music as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and as a solo artist.

"There's been too much focus in recent years on surface rather than substance," Crosby said. "But Neil can really write a song that you'll remember 20 years from now."

Also on hand to honor Young, 64, were cinema stars Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey, along with singers Keith Urban, Elvis Costello, Beck, Sheryl Crow and James Taylor.

Rollingstone.com said for his part, Young discussed his forthcoming new album and how it feels to look back on a music career that spanned multiple decades.

"You know how uncomfortable it is to see pictures of yourself 30 or 40 years ago," Young said, "It's a funny feeling. I listen to some of those songs and go how, 'How can I ever? What am I gonna do now? Who was that guy?'"
