Cornell says Soundgarden to reunite

NEW YORK, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. rock singer Chris Cornell says his former band Soundgarden will reunite in 2010 after more than a decade apart.

Cornell, 45, announced the reunion news via the social networking service Twitter and included the address of a new Web site, Soundgardenworld.com, Billboard.com reported Friday.

In addition to Cornell, Soundgarden consisted of guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron. The band broke up in spring 1997.

Official details regarding a possible Soundgarden tour were not available as Cameron is set to tour with Pearl Jam as the band's permanent drummer.

Sources said Soundgarden is in considering performance offers from festivals in the United States and abroad.

Sources told Billboard.com reunion talks for the band began after Cornell performed a song with Pearl Jam during a Los Angeles show Oct. 6.
