Jackson to get lifetime achievement Grammy

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- The U.S. Recording Academy has announced plans to honor Leonard Cohen, Bobby Darin, Loretta Lynn and the late Michael Jackson with lifetime achievement awards.

Also to be recognized for their career achievements are David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Andre Previn and Clark Terry, the Academy said Thursday.

The prizes are to be handed out during a special invitation-only ceremony held on Jan. 30 during Grammy Week, and a formal acknowledgment will be made during the 52nd annual Grammy Awards telecast, which is to be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Jan. 31, and broadcast live on the CBS Television Network.

"This year's honorees are a prestigious group of diverse and prominent creators who have contributed some of the most distinguished and influential recordings," Recording Academy President/Chief Executive Officer Neil Portnow said in a statement. "Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come. It is an honor and privilege to recognize such talented individuals who have had and will continue to have such an influence in both our culture and the music industry."

Jackson died June 25 at the age of 50. The circumstances of his death, which was declared a homicide after lethal levels of anesthesia and sedatives were found in his system, are still under investigation.
