Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne have signed on to return for the sequel to their 2020 action film, The Old Guard, Netflix announced. The ensemble for the graphic-novel adaptation will also include Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Victoria Mahoney will helm the Old Guard followup. She recently worked as second unit director on J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker, making her the first woman and first Black woman to earn that title for a Star Wars film.
Executive producer Greg Rucka wrote the screenplay for the second Old Guard movie based on the comic-book series he created with Leandro Fernández.
"Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard," Mahoney said in a statement Thursday.
"I must've watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement -- being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences.
