Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Warner Bros., Studiocanal and American Zoetrope have announced plans to release a 4K restoration of the star-studded 1983 drama, The Outsiders.

Based on S.E. Hinton's 1967 young-adult novel and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film helped launch the careers of C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane and Emilio Estevez.

The new version, billed as The Outsiders: The Complete Novel, will include new music and several scenes cut from the theatrical version that have since been reconstructed from original camera negatives.

"The Outsiders: The Complete Novel came about after meeting students over the years who repeatedly asked me why certain scenes from S.E. Hinton's wonderful book were missing from the theatrical version," Coppola said in a statement Tuesday.

"These questions reminded about my inspiration for the film -- in 1980, a contingent of 12- to 14-year-old students wrote and asked me to make it. I listened to those young fans back then, and I continue to listen to young people now and believe in their opinions, so this complete film version of the novel is for them."

The new version of the movie about rival teen factions in 1960s Oklahoma will be released in North American theaters Sept. 26.

Warner Bros. said it will also make both it and the original version available in a 4K UHD Collector's Edition and on digital platforms Nov. 9.

The Outsiders: The Complete Novel will be available on HBO Max as of Nov. 16 and will also air this fall on Turner Classic Movies.

Tulsa's Outsiders Museum -- which is actually the house where much of the movie was filmed -- is planning a screening of the new version on Sept. 25.

The museum continues to attract fans of both the book and the movie.

Brendan Fraser, Michael Abbott Jr., Jesse Plemons, Pat Healy and Josh Fadem stopped by last weekend because they were in the area filming their own picture, Killers of the Flower Moon.
