Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Nomadland will be honored by FIPRESCI, the International Federation of Film Critics, in September.
FIPRESCI announced Wednesday that it selected Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao and starring Frances McDormand, as its best film of 2021.
Nomadland beat out Thomas Vinterberg's Another Round, Jasmila Zbanic's Quo Vadis, Aida?, Radu Jude's Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn, and Alexandre Koberidze's What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? for the honor.
Nomadland will receive the FIPRESCI Grand Prix at the opening gala of the 69th annual San Sebastian Festival on Sept. 17. FIPRESCI did not award a Grand Prix in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Zhao is the first Chinese director to win the FIPRESCI Grand Prix and the second Asian filmmaker to receive the prize, following Korean director Kim Ki-duk, who won for 3-Iron in 2005.
Nomadland opened in theaters in February. The film has won several awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao and Best Actress for McDormand at the Academy Awards in April.
