June 7 (UPI) -- Rob Zombie announced on his Instagram Monday that he will direct a feature film adaptation of The Munsters. Zombie says it will be his next film. In his Instagram post, Zombie said he has been chasing a Munsters project for 20 years. His first film as director, House of 1,000 Corpses, was released in 2003.

The Munsters aired for two seasons from 1964 - 1966. Fred Gwynne starred as Herman Munster, the Frankenstein-esque patriarch of a family that also included vampires and werewolves.
The original cast returned in several TV movies. A revival with a new cast, The Munsters Today, aired from 1988 - 1991.
Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller developed a modern update called Mockingbird Lane. NBC passed on the series and aired the pilot as a standalone movie.
Zombie was a heavy metal singer. He founded the band White Zombie and began releasing solo music in 1996.
Zombie's horror movie output includes two sequels to Corpses, a Halloween remake and its sequel, The Lords of Salem and 31. Zombie's post also confirms Universal Studios is producing the Munsters movie.
