Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Honey Boy, a new film written by and starring Shia LaBeouf, has released a first trailer.
Amazon Studios released a preview Thursday featuring the 33-year-old actor as James Lort, a fictionalized version of his own father.
Noah Jupe (Wonder, A Quiet Place) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Lady Bird) play young and older versions of Otis Lort, a character based on LaBeouf. The trailer shows Otis' struggles as a child star and troubled relationship with his father.
"How do you think it feels to have my son paying me?" James asks his son.
"You wouldn't be here if I didn't pay you," Otis responds.
Honey Boy is directed by Alma Har'el and co-stars FKA Twigs, Maika Monroe and Natasha Lyonne. The movie is based on LaBeouf's life and was written as part of the actor's rehabilitation program.
"It is strange to fetishize your pain and make a product out of it and feel guilty about that," LaBeouf said at the Sundance Film Festival in January. "This whole thing felt very selfish. I never went into this thinking, 'Oh, I am going to [expletive] help people.' That wasn't my goal. I was falling apart."
LaBeouf is known for starring in the Disney Channel series Even Stevens and the first three Transformers movies. He made headlines in later years for personal issues, including his arrest for public drunkenness in 2017.
Honey Boy opens in theaters Nov. 8.
