May 15 (UPI) -- John David Washington goes after the Ku Klux Klan with help from Adam Driver in the new trailer for director Spike Lee's upcoming film, BlacKkKlansman.

The clip, released Monday following the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, follows the true story of Ron Stallworth (Washington) as he becomes the first African-American detective to serve at the Colorado Springs Police Department in the early 1970s.

Stallworth wishes to drive the KKK out of his town and enlists Flip Zimmerman (Driver), to help him infiltrate the hate group after placing a phone call to their leader David Duke, portrayed by Topher Grace.

"For you, it's a crusade. For me, it's a job," Zimmerman tells Stallworth, who replies, "You're Jewish. They hate you. Doesn't that piss you off? Why are you acting like you ain't got skin in the game?"

BlacKkKlansman is based on Stallworth's 2014 book about his experience infiltrating the KKK titled Black Klansman.

Lee, who also penned the screenplay, is producing alongside Jordan Peele, Jason Blum, Sean McKittrick, Raymond Mansfield, and Shaun Redick.
