Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Gemma Chan has been cast in Marvel's upcoming first female-led superhero film starring Brie Larson, Captain Marvel.

Chan joins the film as Minn-Erva, a Marvel comics character who is a geneticist from the Kree alien race and works as a spy, Deadline reported.

Chan commented on her casting on Twitter saying, "Very excited to be joining the MCU," a reference to Disney's Marvel cinematic universe.

Larson replied to Chan's tweet saying, "This sisterhood is expanding! Congrats."

Chan and Larson will be accompanied by Samuel L. Jackson reprising his Marvel role as Nick Fury, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn as the film's villain. Captain Marvel, from directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with a script by Nicole Perlman, takes place in the '90s before the events of Iron Man which kicked off the Marvel cinematic universe in 2008. The super heroine obtains her superpowers after fusing with an alien.

Marvel previously announced that Captain Marvel would be taking on powerful alien race The Skrulls who are prominent figures in the pages of Marvel comics.

Chan is known for starring in AMCs Humans and will next be seen in the film adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians followed by Mary Queen of Scots alongside Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan.

Captain Marvel is set to arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.
