Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac explore the unknown in new 'Annihilation' trailer

Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Natalie Portman must survive a dangerous expedition in the latest trailer for upcoming sci-fi thriller, Annihilation.

The clip, released Wednesday, details how Portman decides to journey into a mysterious land known as Area X in order to find a way to save her husband, played by Oscar Isaac.

Portman, a biologist, joins up with three other women played by Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Jennifer Jason Leigh, to explore Area X. Once there, they discover it is inhabited by biological horrors.

Annihilation is based off the 2014 Jeff VanderMeer novel of the same name, which is part of the Southern Reach Trilogy.

Alex Garland is directing the film, marking the second time the filmmaker has worked with Isaac --following 2015's Ex Machina.

Annihilation is set to arrive in theaters on Feb. 23.
