Jada Pinkett Smith slams Golden Globes for 'Girls Trip' snub

Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Jada Pinkett Smith thinks her film Girls Trip should be among the 2018 Golden Globe Awards nominees.

The 46-year-old actress said in a series of tweets Tuesday that the movie and its star Tiffany Haddish weren't nominated for any awards because of underlying "racism."

"I have so much to say on why @TiffanyHaddish was not nominated for a Globe... but I won't," she wrote. "Actually I will... here I go..."

Smith alleged the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which conducts the Golden Globes ceremonies, did not even watch Girls Trip.

"Girls Trip was one of the most successful films this summer & Tiff was hands down the funniest person on screen in 2017 and we couldn't get eyes on the film or a press conference. How could a nom happen & how much more critical acclaim must a movie have to simply get a screening?" the star wrote.

Girls Trip stars Pinkett, Haddish, Regina Hall and Queen Latifah as four friends who travel to New Orleans. The movie received positive reviews, with many praising Haddish's performance, and earned over $138 million at the box office.

"And I dare not invalidate all the many journalist and people from all walks of life who have supported this movie by defining the issue as simply... racism," Pinkett tweeted.

"Hollywood has systems in place that must learn to expand its concepts of race, gender equality and inclusion in regard to its perceptions of art across the board," she added.

An HFPA source told the Los Angeles Times a screening of Girls Trip was held in July. Universal Pictures, which distributed the film, confirmed there was a screening for the HFPA but not a news conference for the stars.
