"I think above all, Call Me by Your Name is a movie about compassion and transmission of knowledge and becoming better people in meeting with other people. And so for me, this is a testament to that. Thank you," the film's director Luca Guadagnino said onstage.

Get Out from writer director Jordan Peele took home two awards including Best Screenplay and the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for Peele.

"When I started to write this film I set out to make a movie that would be my favorite movie that I had never seen," Peele said. "I didn't know it would actually ever get made."

Other winners from the event -- hosted by John Cameron Mitchell -- include Netflix's Strong Island for Best Documentary, James Franco for Best Actor for his role in The Disaster Artist, Saoirse Ronan for Best Actress for her role in Lady Bird, Breakthrough Series - Long Form going to Atlanta and Breakthrough Series - Short Form going to The Strange Eyes of Dr. Myes.
