170 documentaries submitted for Oscar consideration

Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says 170 features have been submitted for consideration in the Best Documentary category for the 90th Academy Awards.

Among them are the high-profile films The American Media and the Second Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Bill Nye: Science Guy, Boston, Casting JonBenet, Chasing Coral, Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives{i:, Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis [Our Friends},] Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars, Gaga: Five Foot Two, Get Me Roger Stone, Gilbert, If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast, An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond -- Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton, Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold, Step, Swim Team and Whitney: Can I Be Me.

A shortlist of 15 films will be announced in December. That roster will be pared down to five final nominees, which will be revealed Jan. 23. The winner ultimately will be announced at the Oscars gala March 4 at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood.
