Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Harvey Weinstein was fired Sunday from the film production company he founded after recent sexual harassment allegations surfaced against the iconic movie producer.

"In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company -- Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar -- have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately," the company said in a statement, reported Variety.

Weinstein has been accused by several women of sexual harassment over the past 27 years, according to a report published last week by the New York Times. He then took a leave of absence from the company and apologized for his past behavior.

"I so respect all women and regret what happened. I hope that my actions will speak louder than words," he said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times.
