Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming fantasy drama, Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig.

Directed by Alexander Payne, the film is set for theatrical release on Dec. 22. It also features Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau and Jason Sudeikis.

"Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek and wife Audrey decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community -- a choice that triggers life-changing adventures," a synopsis explained.

Damon and Wiig are seen undergoing the miniaturization process and adjusting to their new lives in Monday's 2 1/2-minute preview.
