Sept. 12 (UPI) -- J.J. Abrams is to write and direct Star Wars: Episode IX, Lucasfilm announced Tuesday.
The news came a week after the studio said Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow had left the project.

Abrams helmed the critically acclaimed, 2015 blockbuster Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Chris Terrio will help Abrams pen Episode IX.
"With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy," Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.
