Drew Goddard to write, direct 'X-Force' with Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin

Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Filmmaker Drew Goddard has signed on to write and direct X-Men spinoff X-Force that will feature Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Josh Brolin's Cable.

X-Men series producer Simon Kinberg along with Reynolds and Lauren Shulder Donner are producing the project, noted The Hollywood Reporter.

The X-Force, first introduced in the pages of Marvel comics in the early 1990s, follows a special ops mutant team led by Cable that takes on dirtier missions separate from their X-Men counterparts. Characters such as Shatterstar, Feral and Domino have been featured on the team.

Goddard who penned The Martian for X-Men studio Fox also created Netflix's Daredevil series and will next be directing Bad Times at the El Royale starring Chris Hemsworth and Jeff Bridges, noted Deadline.

Brolin's Cable is set to debut in Deadpool 2 alongside Domino who is being portrayed by Zazie Beetz. The sequel is set to hit theaters on June 1, 2018.

X-Force is the latest X-Men film project for Fox following New Mutants from director Josh Boone which arrives April 13, 2018 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix with Kinberg directing that is set for release on Nov. 2, 2018.
