The Pope will follow the election and then resignation of Pope Benedict (Hopkins) and the election of Pope Francis (Pryce), formally known as Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who became the first Jesuit to enter the papacy and the first non-European Pope since the 8th century, noted The Hollywood Reporter.

Production will begin in November in Argentina.

Pryce was recently seen as religious figure the High Sparrow on HBO's Game of Thrones and will next star in director Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote as Don Quixote. Hopkins last appeared in Season 1 of HBO's Westworld and will reprise his role as Odin in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok.
