July 24 (UPI) -- Marvel announced key details surrounding its first female-led superhero film Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson.

Captain Marvel, which is due to hit theaters on March 8, 2019, will take place in the '90s before the events of Iron Man which kicked off the Marvel cinematic universe in 2008, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige announced at the San Diego Comic-Con.

Larson will be seen in the film taking on the powerful aliens The Skrulls who are prominent figures in Marvel comics but have never been featured on the big screen before.

Feige also announced that Captain Marvel will be joined by Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury with both his eyes intact before the S.H.I.E.L.D. leader dons his signature eye patch.

Captain Marvel is set to be directed by duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck with a script by Nicole Perlman.

"I think that making sure that Captain Marvel is not somebody who is a hero in spite of her femininity is really important. She's a very strong character and her being a woman is part of that strength," Perlman said previously.
