July 20 (UPI) -- The trailer for Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water has gotten more than 1.5 million views since it was posted on YouTube Wednesday.

Set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, the sci-fi fairy tale is scheduled for theatrical release Dec. 8. It stars Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.

"In the hidden, high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa [played by Hawkins] is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda [played by Spencer] discover a secret, classified experiment," said a synopsis accompanying this week's 2 1/2-minute preview video.

The clip shows mute Elisa defying orders and connecting on a human level to the mysterious, underwater, two-legged creature her employers keep housed in a tank at the lab.
