June 30 (UPI) -- Evan Peters has signed on to return as mutant Quicksilver in Fox's upcoming X-Men sequel, Dark Phoenix.

Peters joins the superhero ensemble film the same time as Lamar Johnson, a star from Canadian show The Next Step has been cast, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

Peters has previously portrayed Quicksilver, the son of main antagonist Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who can run at super-speeds in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past and 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse.

Quicksilver was last seen in Apocalypse once again using his speed to slow down time in order to save the X-Men from certain danger. The character has also yet to reveal to Magneto that he is the villains son.

Dark Phoenix, based on the classic X-Men comic series The Dark Phoenix Saga, will feature how the Phoenix Force inherits Jen Grey's (Sophie Turner) body, unlocking her true power and turning her into a dangerous force.

The film, set to be written and directed by X-Men franchise producer Simon Kinberg, will also feature the returns of Fassbender, James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler).
