June 5 (UPI) -- Dan Aykroyd says that director Paul Feig is to blame for Sony not wanting to make any more sequels to the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot due to budget concerns.

"The girls are great in it. Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig – what wonderful, wonderful players they are – and Leslie Jones," Aykroyd who starred in and co-wrote the original 1984 Ghostbusters said on British talk show Sunday Brunch of the cast featured in the reboot.

"I was really happy with the movie, but it cost too much. And Sony does not like to lose money, they don't. It made a lot of money around the world but just cost too much, making it economically not feasible to do another one. So that's too bad," he continued.

"The director, he spent too much on it," Aykroyd said of Feig. "He didn't shoot scenes we suggested to him and several scenes that were going to be needed and he said 'Nah, we don't need them.' Then we tested the movie and they needed them and he had to go back. About $30 to $40 million in reshoots. So he will not be back on the Sony lot any time soon."

The Ghostbusters reboot was able to earn $229 million worldwide on a budget that cost more than $140 million.

Sony has stated to IGN that reshoots for the film did take place, however, they only cost between $3 and $4 million to complete.

Before the release of the Ghostbusters reboot, Aykroyd had praised the project stating "It has more laughs and more scares."
