May 25 (UPI) -- Sony Pictures Classics says it acquired the North American rights to The Silent Man, a film starring Liam Neeson as famed whistleblower Mark Felt.

Written and directed by Peter Landesman, the movie is set for release in September. It co-stars Diane Lane, Marton Csokas, Josh Lucas, Tony Goldwyn, Michael C. Hall, Tom Sizemore, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ike Barinholtz, Bruce Greenwood, Brian D'Arcy James, Kate Walsh, Noah Wyle and Maika Monroe.

"Mark Felt was one of the most instrumental figures in American history and yet very little is known of him and the risks he took to reveal the truth. This is an incredible story well told by Peter and his creative team, with a top-notch cast led by an extraordinary performance from Liam. This film could be not more timely and relevant for audiences," Sony Pictures Classics said in a statement Thursday.

The company also released a trailer that offered a first look at Neeson as Felt, the high-ranking, FBI informant known as "Deep Throat" during the Watergate scandal, which ended with U.S. President Richard Nixon's resignation. Felt died in 2008 at the age of 95.
