Charlie Hunnam says his dream is to direct

May 10 (UPI) -- British actor Charlie Hunnam says he is "delighted" with how his acting career has been going, but he admits he is also eager to produce and direct projects.

"I'm incredibly grateful and delighted with how things are going right now and just to continue working with directors that I love and inspire me and doing a diverse range of films. More quiet films like The Lost City of Z and big, exciting spectacles like this, too," Hunnam said at a recent New York press conference to promote his fantasy epic King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

But the Sons of Anarchy alum indicated he is also eager to work behind the camera.

"I suppose the one element that I want to introduce more is development," the 37-year-old actor noted. "I've been developing a few ideas. I have three projects set up at three, different studios. I'm really enjoying that, but there is a steep learning curve for me. As actors, we get to swan in at the last minute after all of the hard work has been done and just execute the vision, which is always exciting and fun, and then leave and the rest of the film-making community has to put the whole thing together. But I've actually been very, very excited to be taking ideas from seed and trying to develop it. And, then, I have some aspiration a long way down the line to direct a film at some point."

Fans shouldn't worry about Hunnam fading away from the big screen any time soon, however.

"I just shot an adaptation of Papillon with Rami Malek, with a great, Danish director called Michael Noer directing, so that was a lot of fun. I actually just read a script last night, which I am not going to talk about, obviously, because I haven't even spoken to the director. But I read a script last night that I really liked," he revealed. "So, I'm just trying to take my time. I'm in a better position in my career than I've ever been and I don't want to [expletive] it up. So, I'm just taking my time and trying to find something really exciting to do."

Directed by Guy Ritchie, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is to open in theaters Friday. It co-stars Aidan Gillen, Djimon Hounsou and Eric Bana.
