April 28 (UPI) -- Filmmaker McG will no longer be directing Sony's upcoming live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe as the film receives an official release date.

Masters of the Universe is now set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2019, Entertainment Weekly reported.

McG was first attached to the long in-development project in January 2016. The studio is now in search of a new director who will be handling a script by David S. Goyer of Batman Begins and Man of Steel fame.

Based on the popular 1980s animated series of the same name, Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who transforms into the heroic He-Man in order to protect the magical land of Eternia from the evil Skeletor. The franchise is also notable for Mattel's signature toy line that first launched the property.

The original film released in 1987 starred Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.
