March 17 (UPI) -- Josh Gad visited several theaters in New York City to surprise fans sitting down to view his latest film, Beauty and the Beast.

"A little theater surprise pop-in on at @AMCTheatres 34th to a #BeautyAndTheBeast audience. Complete with a special birthday hug. #NYCSupriseGadSightings," the actor wrote on Instagram alongside a video of himself speaking with moviegoers before the film started Thursday.

The clip features Gad eating from a couple's bag of popcorn and giving a fan a birthday hug as the audience cheered.

"Another theater. Another surprise. Paid a little visit to @regalmovies 42nd Street to pump up a crowd that clearly was already pumped," Gad captioned a second video that features some fans screaming as the 36-year-old enters the theater.

Gad stars as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast, which also features Emma Watson (Belle), Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston), Ewan McGregor (Lumiere), Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) and Emma Thompson (Mrs. Potts). Bill Condon directs.

Gad's LeFou is portrayed as gay, a first for a Disney film.
