Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro announced Tuesday there will not be a third film in his live-action Hellboy franchise.

"Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it," del Toro tweeted.

Based on graphic novels by writer-artist Mike Mignola and featuring Ron Perlman as the titular demon, Hellboy was released in 2004 and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army hit theaters in 2008. The movies also starred Doug Jones, Selma Blair and the late John Hurt. The cast members reprised their roles vocally in two direct-to-video, animated movies, as well.

Perlman addressed the news about the thwarted, third movie with his trademark dry humor.

"In loving memory of the #Hellboy franchise officially biting the dust, I will take the rest of the day off Twitter," he wrote.

However, Perlman returned three minutes later, tweeting: "Just kidding. [Expletive] Trump!"
