Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Director Sofia Coppola takes a dark turn in a first teaser for her movie Beguiled.

Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning star in a suspenseful first teaser trailer for the "seductive thriller."

Farrell plays John McBurney, a wounded Union soldier who is taken in at an all-girls boarding school in Virginia. The women (Kidman, Dunst and Fanning) begin to turn on each other and him after he cons his way into their hearts.

Beguiled is based on the Thomas P. Cullinan novel A Painted Devil, which was published in 1966. The book was previously adapted as a 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood, Geraldine Page, Elizabeth Hartman and Jo Ann Harris.

"The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and then also the power shifts between men and women," Coppola told Entertainment Weekly. "So for me, it's very universal, but it's in this exotic setting of the Southern gentility."

"I haven't really done a genre film," she said. "It was fun to figure out how to approach that but still [keep the movie] in my style, and to have this kind of beautiful, dreamy world that I like -- but with a plot!"

Coppola is known for such films as Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette. Kidman will also star in the new HBO series Big Little Lies, while Dunst and Fanning are slated for Woodshock and A Storm in the Stars, respectively.
