'La La Land' earns a leading 14 Oscar nominations; 'Arrival' and 'Moonlight' follow with 8 each

Michael Shannon surprised with a nod for "Nocturnal Animals," while Denzel Washington was snubbed for directing Best Picture nominee "Fences" and Amy Adams was left off the Best Actress list for "Arrival."

Jan. 24 (UPI) -- The contemporary musical La La Land was nominated for a leading 14 Oscar nominations -- including Best Picture -- in Beverly Hills Tuesday morning.

The science-fiction picture Arrival and the coming-of-age story Moonlight earned eight nods apiece.

Michael Shannon surprised with a mention for his work in Nocturnal Animals, while Denzel Washington was snubbed for directing the Best Picture nominee Fences and Amy Adams was left off the Best Actress list for the Best Picture contender Arrival.

Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Emmanuel Lubezki, Jason Reitman and Ken Watanabe, as well as Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, read the names during a pre-taped nominations announcement, which was streamed online and broadcast on various television news programs.
