LOS ANGELES, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver are two missionaries in search of their mentor Liam Neeson in Japan in the first trailer for Martin Scorsese's Silence.

The clip, released Tuesday, explores the duo's troubles in Japan as they teach Christianity to locals and face torture from those who oppose their presence.

Based on the acclaimed 1966 Shusaku Endo novel of the same name, Garfield and Driver will be facing the ultimate test of faith as they navigate through a country where Christianity is outlawed.

"I pray but I'm lost. Am I just praying to silence?" Garfield's character asks.

Silence is set to arrive in theaters Dec. 23.
