LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Zendaya has opened up about the fan controversy surrounding her rumored role in Marvel and Sony's upcoming superhero epic, Spider-Man: Homecoming. "People are going to react over anything. But nothing [about who she is playing] is fact," the actress explains in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Zendaya is rumored to be playing Spider-Man's famous love interest Mary Jane Watson alongside new wall crawler Tom Holland, however, the former Disney channel star and Marvel have yet to officially reveal her role in the film.
As sources continued to state that Zendaya would indeed appear as Mary Jane, fans backlash ensued with commentators upset that the traditionally Caucasian character would be portrayed by an African American.
"It's funny to watch the guessing game, Zendaya continued to The Hollywood Reporter. "But of course there's going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren't ready. I'm like, 'I don't know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it's beautiful, and that's what should be reflected and that's what is reflected so you're just going to have to get over it."'
When asked if her character is romantically involved with Spider-Man, Zendaya states that she is not explaining, "My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she's so smart, she just feels like she doesn't need to talk to people, like 'My brain is so far ahead of you that you're just not really on my level.' So she comes off very weird."
"But to me, she is very cool because she's deep. She's always thinking about something, always reading. I like that," she continued.
Previously, comics legend and Spider-Man creator Stan Lee defended Zendaya potentially appearing as Mary Jane stating, "It'll be absolutely wonderful."
