LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Disney's long-awaited Enchanted sequel has found its director.

Variety reported Thursday that Hairspray (2007) helmer Adam Shankman will direct the Enchanted followup, Disenchanted, with original star Amy Adams expected to return.

Kevin Lima directed the original 2007 movie, which followed a princess (Adams) who is forced from her fairy tale animated kingdom into the live-action world of New York City. Adams had expressed interest in the sequel in April.

"They've been talking about it for a while, so I really embrace and look forward to what they do and hope to be involved," the 42-year-old actress told E! News at the time.

Disenchanted will take place 10 years after the original, and see Adams' character, Giselle, question her "happily ever after." It is unknown if original stars James Marsden, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel and Susan Sarandon will also return.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Disney hopes to begin filming the sequel in 2017. Adams is also slated to reprise Lois Lane in Justice League and will star on the new HBO series Sharp Objects.
