PITTSBURGH, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reflect on their lives as a married couple in the first teaser trailer for upcoming drama, Fences.

Now a garbage man to make ends meet, Washington's character is frustrated that he's "been standing in the same place for 18 years."

"Well I've been standing with you. I gave 18 years of my life to stand in the same spot as you," Davis' character Rose Maxson fires back emotionally.

Fences, which is also directed by Washington, is an adaptation of the August Wilson stage play of the same name. Washington and Davis starred as Troy and Rose onstage where they both won Tony Awards for acting in 2010.

This is Washington's third film as director following 2002's Antwone Fisher and 2007's The Great Debaters.

Fences in due in theaters Dec. 25, 2016.
