LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Mr. Robot star Rami Malek is in talks to star in an upcoming remake of Papillon.

Former Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam has signed onto the project as well to portray main character Henri Charriere, aka Papillon, originally portrayed by Steve McQueen.

Set to be directed by Michael Noer from a script by Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski, Papillon is based on the memoirs of convicted felon Charriere who was unjustly imprisoned for murder in 1930s France.

The remake will be a contemporary version that retells the story of Charriere and how he enlists the help of counterfeiter Dega in order to escape from prison. Production is set to start this September.

Malek is currently starring in Season 2 of USA's hit computer hacker drama Mr. Robot which earned a Emmy nomination for Best Drama and a Lead Actor in a Drama Series nod for Malek back in July. Winners will be announced Sept. 18.
