LOS ANGELES, July 28 (UPI) -- The Great Wall released a first teaser starring Matt Damon on Thursday.

The trailer sees the 45-year-old actor fight monsters along the legendary Great Wall of China. The fantasy-adventure film takes place during the Northern Song Dynasty, which ran from 959 to 1126.

The Great Wall is directed by Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers). The movie is the most expensive Chinese film of all time and co-stars Andy Lau, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Jing Tian.

"At its core, it is a period piece and an action film," Yimou told Entertainment Weekly. "The fantasy element does play a major role because of the monsters. But, what makes our film unique is that these are ancient Chinese monsters."

"Even though it's a fantasy movie, we filmed it in a very realistic way," he added. "We want it to feel like the events actually happened. Other than the monster, all aspects of this film are backed by either scientific or historical research."

The Great Wall opens in theaters Feb. 17, 2017.
