LOS ANGELES, June 28 (UPI) -- Benedict Wong says his Doctor Strange role will differ from the source material.

The 44-year-old British actor will play Wong in the new movie and revealed the character will take a "different direction" in the film than the Marvel comics.

"I'm certainly not going to be the tea-making manservant," Wong told Den of Geek. "We're heading in a different direction. He's more of a drill sergeant."

"There isn't any martial arts for Wong in Doctor Strange, actually," he revealed. "He's more of a drill sergeant to Kamar-Taj. He's one of the masters of sorcery."

In the comics, Wong is depicted as a skilled martial artist who serves as Doctor's Strange's sidekick and valet. The character hails from Kamar-Taj, the isolated community where the Ancient One, a powerful mystic, resides.

More controversially, Doctor Strange will also switch up its portrayal of the Ancient One. The movie will feature Tilda Swinton as a female, Celtic version of the character, instead of the traditionally male, Tibetan representation.

"The script that I was presented with did not feature an Asian man for me to play, so that was never a question when I was being asked to do it," Swinton said in April in response to accusations of whitewashing.

"All will be revealed when you see the film, I think," she said. "There are very great reasons for us to feel very settled and confident with the decisions that were made."

Doctor Strange will star Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character and open in theaters Nov. 4. Wong is known for Prometheus and The Martian and played Kublai Khan on the Neflix series Marco Polo.
