LOS ANGELES, June 7 (UPI) -- Twentieth Century Fox has released new footage from its upcoming Independence Day sequel.

The 70-second clip shows Jeff Goldblum's character, computer expert and environmentalist David Levinson, as he learns more about a fear-inducing symbol and the language of the aliens threatening to annihilate Planet Earth.

"We always knew they were coming back," reads a message accompanying Monday's footage. "After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day: Resurgence features returning original ID stars Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner and Sela Ward. Franchise newcomers include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher and Maika Monroe.
