'Angry Birds' nests atop the North American box office with $39 million

LOS ANGELES, May 22 (UPI) -- The animated adventure The Angry Birds Movie is the No. 1 film in North America after earning $39 million in receipts, Box Office Mojo announced Sunday.

The screen adaptation of the popular video game ended the two-week, chart-topping reign of Captain America: Civil War, forcing it into second place with $33.1 million.

Coming in at No. 3 for the period of May 20-22 is Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with $21.8 million, followed by The Nice Guys at No. 4 with $11.3 million and The Jungle Book at No. 5 with $11 million.

Rounding out the top tier are Money Monster at No. 6 with $7.1 million, The Darkness at No. 7 with $2.4 million, Zootopia at No. 8 with $1.7 million, The Huntsman: Winter's War at No. 9 with $1.2 million and Mother's Day at No. 10 with $1.1 million.
