LOS ANGELES, May 20 (UPI) -- Development on Sherlock Holmes 3 continues, with producer Joel Silver saying that filming could begin in a few months.

"It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He's gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we're trying to get it done," Silver said of franchise lead Robert Downey Jr.'s interest in getting the film made while speaking to Collider at a press event for The Nice Guys.

"We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we're hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we'll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now," he continued.

Law played Sherlock's detective partner, Dr. Watson, alongside Downey in 2009's Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, both directed by Guy Ritchie. A third film has been in development ever since.

When asked how long it's taken to finish the trilogy, and whether the third film would be the last, Silver responded: "I hope [it's not the last one]. I don't think so. How many Bond films have they made? As long as there's a character, we can work with it. It's not an end story. We can keep going, as long as people want to do it. It's [the actor's] call. They have to say, 'Okay, I'm ready to go.' I read about them making another Bad Boys. If they want to do it, then you try to get it done."

Downey has remained busy as Marvel superhero Iron Man/Tony Stark leading to delays; however, the actor recently said that he is still eager to return to the role. "If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. When we're making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I'm tired all the time, but I'm so excited about it," he said to ShortList at a press event for Captain America: Civil War.

Downey is scheduled to next appear in Avengers: Infinity War and then Spider-Man: Homecoming for Marvel.
