LOS ANGELES, May 9 (UPI) -- Sony Pictures has released a teaser trailer for Inferno, the third installment in its Robert Langdon mystery franchise.

Like its predecessors 2006's The Da Vinci Code and 2009's Angels & Demons, Inferno is based on a novel by best-selling author Dan Brown.

Ron Howard has directed all three films with Tom Hanks playing Langdon, a brilliant American symbologist.

This time around, Langdon finds himself "on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself," a synopsis says. "When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to foil a deadly global plot."

Penned by David Koepp, the film co-stars Felicity Jones, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy and Ben Foster. It is due in theaters Oct. 28.
