NEW YORK, April 21 (UPI) -- British actress Tilda Swinton says she is confident in her casting as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, even though the character she plays is an Asian man in the movie's comic-book source material.
"The script that I was presented with did not feature an Asian man for me to play, so that was never a question when I was being asked to do it," Swinton told reporters during a roundtable interview in New York Thursday when questioned about her hiring for a role for which some fans don't think she is right. "All will be revealed when you see the film, I think. There are very great reasons for us to feel very settled and confident with the decisions that were made."
Pressed to describe what appeals to her about franchise movies such as Doctor Strange when she is primarily known for starring in art-house pictures like the upcoming A Bigger Splash and the critical darling The Grand Budapest Hotel, Swinton replied, "We are all really looking forward to seeing that film, myself included.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing what's been made of what we've done," she added. "We're all feeling very excited. It was a good feeling to make [Doctor Strange.] Those opportunities, to make films like the Narnia film, like anything from the Marvel Universe, that is going to touch generations and, particularly, young generations, is really worth considering and in both of those cases -- the Narnia film and this [Doctor Strange] -- they presented me something that I was really intrigued by and I am really happy that they did."
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mads Mikkelsen, Doctor Strange is slated for release Nov. 4.
Director Scott Derrickson shot the picture in several locations around the world, including London, New York, Hong Kong and Kathmandu, Nepal. The movie follows "the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions," a synopsis said.
