LOS ANGELES, April 1 (UPI) -- The Following and Footloose alum Kevin Bacon has signed up for a role in Patriots Day, director Peter Berg's upcoming film about the terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon, CBS Films and Lionsgate announced.
Also known for his work in Mystic River and Black Mass, Bacon will play FBI Special Agent in Charge Richard DesLauriers in Patriots Day.
"Richard DesLauriers worked tirelessly as one of the key figures in an impossibly sophisticated investigation and Kevin Bacon possesses the intelligence and empathy to portray him," Berg said in a statement Thursday.
The ensemble also includes Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman, J.K. Simmons and Michelle Monaghan. The film is currently in production in Boston and will open in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 21.
Three people were killed and more than 250 injured in the bombing perpetrated by Islamic extremists.
